The December 26, 2004 Earthquake Tsunami Disaster of Indian Ocean

On the morning of December 26, 2004 a magnitude 9.3 earthquake struck off the Northwest coast of the Indonesian island of Sumatra. The earthquake resulted from complex slip on the fault where the oceanic portion of the Indian Plate slides under Sumatra, part of the Eurasian Plate. The earthquake deformed the ocean floor, pushing the overlying water up into a tsunami wave. The tsunami wave devastated nearby areas where the wave may have been as high as 25 meters (80 feet) tall and killed nearly 300,000 people from nations in the region and tourists from around the world. The tsunami wave itself also traveled the globe, and was measured in the Pacific and many other places by tide gauges. Measurements in California exceeded 40 cm in height, while New Jersey saw water level fluctuations as great as 34 cm. Eyewitness accounts, photos, and videos provided unprecedented documentation of the event. To prepare for future tsunamis, we encourage everyone to educate themselves about what they can do now, and in the event that they should ever be threatened by a tsunami. Tornadoes

Tornadoes are nature’s most violent storms. Spawned from powerful thunderstorms, tornadoes can cause fatalities and devastate a neighborhood in seconds. A tornado appears as a rotating, funnel-shaped cloud that extends from a thunderstorm to the ground with whirling winds that can reach 300 miles per hour. Damage paths can be in excess of one mile wide and 50 miles long. Every state is at some risk from this hazard.  http://www.nssl.noaa.gov/edu/safety/tornadoguide.html

A rare tornado hit Salt Lake City on Aug. 11, 1999 -   The Omaha, Nebraska Tornado of May 6, 1975  killed 3 people and injuring over 200 people. Because the tornado occurred during the day, it helped make it easier to spot and track, reducing the possibility of fatalities and injuries. The twister tore through west-central Omaha, destroying 287 homes and damaging 1400 others. In 1975, total damage from the storm reached over $1.1 billion dollars. When adjusted for inflation, it still ranks as the second most costly storm in U.S. history.        On

Wild Fires

Europe's 2003 summer heat wave fanned the flames of massive wild fires throughout the continent, from Sweden to Russia. After the fires, severely burned areas faced increased erosion due to the loss of vegetation and the creation of water-repellent soils that can cause flooding, vitiate streams and lakes with mud, and threaten people and property.  http://www.agu.org/sci_soc/prrl/jh050222.html

Severe wildfires scorch more of the USA each year. The Forest Service had a backlog of 1.1 million acres that needed replanting in 2005 — a combined area slightly larger than Rhode Island — according to the agency's latest reforestation report. Last year, it could replant only 153,000 acres.  Wildfires last year scorched almost 8.7 million acres, the highest total in more than a half-century — until this year's record 9.6 million acres burned. 12/20/2006  By Patrick O'Driscoll, USA TODAY http://www.usatoday.com/news/nation/2006-12-20-reforestation_x.htm

Wildfire is a growing problem in the Western United States of America. There are an increasing number of wildfires. Arizona's two largest wildfires ever recorded - Chideska-Rodeo and Cave Creek Complex - burned since 2003.   http://www.pbase.com/azleader/wildfire

Virginia Tech University Shooting - April 16, 2007.

BLACKSBURG, Virginia (CNN) -- A gunman who killed at least 30 people in one of two shootings on the campus of Virginia Tech was dressed "almost like a Boy Scout," said a student who survived by pretending to lie dead on a classroom floor.

Senseless!! This one person's murderous act causes soooo much harm.  Harm of a girl which causes harm to a friend, a family, a university, a city, a state, an entire country, and the world.  It is heartbreaking, violent, tragic, - a breaking of families, a shattering of future lives, a splitting of a community, and an infusing of fear and doubt.  How can this cycle stop?
